MLOs and Evidence:
1.1. Students are able to communicate effectively in Japanese in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational; and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Intermediate-High level of language proficiency, according to the ACTFL Guidelines.
- To fulfill this MLO, the instructor spoke mainly in Japanese, and expected us to do so as much as possible as well. We also learned more advanced grammar and vocabulary, as well as new kanji throughout the course.

This course allowed for increased proficiency in conversing in Japanese, as well as various chances to practice writing sentences and Kanji. Furthermore, we were required to prove proficiency with language devices and new grammar. We accomplished this through daily conversation, worksheets to practice grammar, and skits. We also did three presentations on varying topics: first, traveling. Second, a custom or tradition. And third, an introduction of someone using formal, respectful language. We became able to make daily conversation in Japanese, talk and write about travel experiences and Japanese/American customs/traditions, talk with people higher in station than us using honorific forms, and do formal speeches.
I highly value the gained ability to:
- read and write important Kanji
- speak in a respectful manner to a limited degree
- make daily conversation with Japanese native speakers
- talk and write about various different topics
I hope to improve my ability to speak freely without being nervous, which requires further practice and further study of vocabulary and grammar. I also hope to learn much more Kanji to improve my ability to read Japanese.
