Students will use appropriate technologies in research and studies relative to Japanese language and culture.
Students will collect, manage and analyze current and emerging technology-based resources to develop and produce their scholarly work.
• We fulfilled this MLO by beginning our capstone research under the guidance of Dr. Sekine, as well as some guest instructors. We applied this research to our capstone projects.

This course is the first step in starting our senior research project at CSUMB. Unlike other departments, we start with this course and move on to others during the Spring semester in order to be better prepared and gain the most from our capstone experience. As this is my second time undergoing this process, I feel I was able to hone certain skills even further. The details come to light a lot faster when you’ve a basic grasp of what is expected of you during this process.
Throughout this course, I was able to learn new methods for finding academic sources, and especially academic sources in Japanese. This is something I will certainly have to put to good use in future academic settings (i.e. credential program). I learned about some efficient and interesting tools for organizing bibliographies, my thoughts, and content. With the ever-evolving nature of technology, it’s important to stay on top of these things, so I was pleased to have the opportunity to receive that information rather than seeking it out on my own.
I hope to learn to use new tools more effectively. Right now, because I only have a tentative grasp of some of them, I don’t feel inclined to put them to use. I think it would benefit me to practice and develop further so that I can become more efficient.
I’ve been able to do this kind of work before in courses such as GS 362: Global Literatures. My final project for that class focused on the westernization of Buddhism, and particularly Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism, which is popular in Japan. I did a lot of research on the topic in that course using methods I learned in Pre-Capstone (the first time I took it). I was even able to find Japanese sources on the topic due to what I learned in Pre-Capstone.
I know that when working as a teacher (which is my goal), there are many opportunities to engage in professional development, and a lot of this can be done through the use of technology. I think it’s important that I apply skills I’ve gained in this course to that process, and I know that I will be able to find better resources for my students because of what I’ve learned here.
