MLOs and Evidence:
MLO 1.1 - Students are able to communicate effectively in Japanese in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational; and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Intermediate-High level of language proficiency, according to the ACTFL Guidelines.
- To fulfill this MLO, we consistently spoke only in Japanese, and learned more complex grammar. We also did guided readings in class, and a final presentation on a reading we did on our own.
MLO 1.2 - Students gain competency in the Japanese language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and discourse and compare and analyze the structural differences between Japanese and English.
- To fulfill this MLO, we often analyzed the texts we were reading and broke them down in class.

In this course, we approached Japanese from a literary perspective and learned new aspects of the language while reading texts ranging from children's books to more advanced, surreal works of fiction. This allowed us to grow accustomed to reading Japanese texts gradually over the course of the class.
Our work mainly consisted of readings and learning new kanji, but we also created our own illustrated version of the first text we read to demonstrate our understanding of the text. We also presented a text that we'd read individually at the end of the course to demonstrate how well we were able to read on our own.
Through this work, I gained the ability to read more fluidly and quickly in Japanese, as well as comprehend advanced texts even with incomplete knowledge of all kanji. I also developed a deeper cultural appreciation for Japanese by reading folk stories as well as modern examples of literature. In the future, I hope to study more kanji so that I can better delve into nuanced texts in Japanese without using context clues alone. I also hope to brush up on the grammar taught in this course.
Since taking the course, I have tried to read several Japanese texts on my own while highlighting and studying kanji and grammar I do not know so that I can learn it. I plan to continue to do this to learn new kanji, in particular.
