MLOs and Evidence:
3.1 Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of the Japanese culture with a second culture other than Japan.
3.2 Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture other than Japanese.
- To fulfill this MLO, I often used cross-cultural comparison in my class discussions of the novels we read. This was a major point of reflection for me during all of the readings.

This course is now called The Chicano Narrative. In this course, we read a number of different literary works by Chicano/Chicana authors, gaining different perspectives from each. Each work had a distinctive style and content, and offered something completely new. We analyzed these texts as groups in class, and wrote multiple papers on them. I gained more from this class than nearly any other class in my entire college experience.
I wrote three major papers for this course, two on two different novels read during the course, and a final paper integrating all of the novels. These papers can be found here, here, and here.
In the future, I hope to continue to read Chicano literature, and learn even more about the cultural implications of this. Not only because of my own interest, but also because my step-mother and younger sister are Mexican. My step-mother in particular can help me further understand the subjects that come with studying Chicano literature, I believe, and this is something I would like to pursue. The cross-cultural understandings I gained in this course will also facilitate my interactions with other cultures and my endeavors to understand them.
