JAPN 304 - Introduction to Translation and Interpretation
Course Description:
This course is an introduction to translating and interpreting that provides an overview of the knowledge necessary for the field of translation and interpretation. Students will study general issues involved in translating and interpreting and building the foundation of knowledge and techniques including rapid reading, analyzing, summarizing and paraphrasing, listening comprehension, and shadowing. Taught in Japanese.

MLOs and Evidence:
MLO 1.1 - Students are able to communicate effectively in Japanese in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational; and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Intermediate-High level of language proficiency, according to the ACTFL Guidelines.
- In this course, we fulfilled this MLO by discussing all translations in Japanese, interpreting Japanese to create our translations, and presenting our translations via sight translation.
MLO 1.2 - Students gain competency in the Japanese language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and discourse and compare and analyze the structural differences between Japanese and English.
- We fulfilled this MLO by constantly translating and interpreting from English to Japanese and Japanese to English, thus increasing our understanding of Japanese language.

In this course, we interpreted and translated from Japanese to English and English to Japanese. I was able to gain a more nuanced understanding of the Japanese language through this experience. We did sight translations as well as group translations, often with the expectation that we think on our feet and perform under pressure.
In this course, I increased my proficiency in translating and interpreting by gaining a better understanding of the rules of translating, as well as learning how to read between the lines. We also learned how to create a readable and accurate translation without sacrificing a great deal of content during the conversion.
In the future, I hope to apply the concepts and skills I gained in this course to my own personal reading of Japanese texts. By doing sight translations in my head, I hope to improve my understanding of Japanese on my own, as well as comparing my own interpretations to those of others who have translated the texts I read.
